Earth Angel by Jerrine Gray
FINDING A PLACE IN HUNTSVILLE’S HISTORY
The Dream Maker, a Huntsville New Thought rock and gift shop, had it’s beginnings over 18 years ago. When Ron and Jerrine Gray were dating in the early 90’s, Jerrine took Ron to his first Gem and Mineral Show. She bought him a fluorite octahedron, and “rock bug” bit. Soon their home was overflowing with rock and mineral specimens, and, in order to keep collecting, Ron began selling at flea markets and rock and craft shows. At this time Ron worked for Boeing, and when he entered a Boeing craft show he won first prize for a dream catcher he’d made and titled “The Dream Maker”. Hence the name for their shop.
In 1994 when Ron was laid off from Boeing, they opened their first storefront location in Main Street South Shopping Village. Since they were also both licensed massage therapists, they included space there to expand their practices. By 2000, they had outgrown their Main Street South location and moved the Dream Maker to the Huntington Center on South Parkway.
In 2007 Ron and Jerrine were able to purchase their own piece of history---the old Ann Bradshaw Clopton’s house on Triana Boulevard. Ann Bradshaw Clopton was a world famous artist who painted delicate pictures on spider webs. She was featured at the world’s fair in Chicago, and also in Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not” museum. Her paintings are still on exhibit here at the Burritt Museum on the mountain.
The Clopton house is the location where the Merrimack family first settled, and it is not far from the current soccer fields where the mills and mill village were located. This house has a creative, artistic “feel”, and Jerrine and Ron felt at home from the first time they walked into it. Moving the Dream Maker into it was amazingly easy. The property has over an acre of land, with 100 year old pecan trees offering their venerable presence in the back yard that seems almost like a park. A first-time visitor will first notice that a natural brown gravel parking lot was chosen (for ecological reasons). The Dream Maker’s theme is to bring harmony through nature, and this is started on the outside by continuing to nurture flower beds that were planted years ago, and to give honor and respect to those ancient trees that continue to provide shade and welcome for anyone wishing to meditate there.
Inside the shop one will find that a good portion of the Dream Maker space is devoted to rock and mineral specimens, as well as fossils. One can find large amethyst pieces down to 100’s of small tumbled and polished semiprecious gemstones from all over the world. The newest acquisitions are some large Chinese statues, and one of them is a Buddha in the front room that truly radiates peace. In addition to rocks and minerals, the shop offers a gamut of multi-cultural items such as Native American horsehair pottery, sage, sweet grass and incense, jade feng shui frogs, books and c.d.s, and always jewelry from here and around the world. At this new location, one can find an eclectic mix of natural history, cultural history, and intriguing bits of spiritual history. The Dream Maker is the culmination of many lines of thought, artistry, and beliefs. We are the beginning of a new awareness that will lead to ever higher avenues of expression. Our history is truly our launching pad.
